“My Space”
Throughout a series of liminal photos and interview questions, I explored the personal space of four subjects. A person's space can tell you a lot about someone: Do they use it a lot or a little? How do they decorate? Are there any rules, a relic of the past or present, a specific scent, are they neat or messy, their interests, is it giving off your personality or emotions? The idea was loosely inspired by Danelle Manthey's “American Christmas” and Paula Salischiker's "The Art of Keeping,” after learning about their work last semester. Rather than the person being photographed alongside, I wanted the space to tell its own story and to dig deeper into the subject through just their own voice without giving too much away. I viewed each space as a found still life, as if you were walking in them, so I intentionally did not touch up much or arrange anything shown in the photos.
