The Silent Coquí explores the silence Puerto Ricans are subjected to, as embodied by the symbol of a mute coquí, the native tree frog known for singing its name. The coquí has come to represent the island, its vibrant culture, and the people of Puerto Rico. By taking away its voice, the work reflects the political and economic neglect the island faces despite being a US territory. Areas affected by hurricanes remain covered in debris and the resources and aid needed to address these issues are withheld by US governing bodies and policies. The silenced coquí personifies that struggle, encouraging viewers to acknowledge the millions of Puerto Ricans who have long been ignored.
